Escape from the Horde

This one-shot adventure starts the characters off deep underground. Goblins have taken over a gnomish warren, and transformed the gnomes into goblins. Next up, they intend to turn the characters into strange monsters. Any dwarves will become hobgoblins, and any humans will become ogres.

The party of random prisoners must sneak, fight, and plot until they make their way into the sunlight.

While the group begin with nothing but their clothes, they can pick up items along the dangerous hallways up. First kitchen knives, then goblin-spears, short swords, and perhaps even some armour before the end.

En route, they encounter:

  • A dragon who can't fit through the door to the treasure room.
  • Goblins behaving like total cunts.
  • Prisons where players can rejoin after their characters have died.
  • Baby gnomes with pointed ears (hopefully players will noticed they're not baby goblins)
  • Magical scrolls with riddles on them - the effect occurs once the answer is spoken aloud.
  • A half-illusory ladder.

Handouts

Source code:

1https://gitlab.com/bindrpg/oneshot

You can compile Escape from the Horde in the usual way with the command:

1make oneshot

This will produce a short adventure with one dungeon floor. However, you can also compile it with two floors, and generally more bells and whistles by simple typing:

1make

Finally, for a longer game:

1make hardcore

This will adjust dozens of things around the adventure, and add an additional chapter. The hardcore mode is there for old-school gamers who want a long game, with serious challenges.
