The One Page Dungeon contest asks people for a single-page dungeon with a Creative Commons, share-alike, attribution licence.

"Huzzah", I thought, "that's GPL compatible!", I imagined, wrongly.

The first caveat is 'GPLv3', which is still fine for what I do, but a shame.

The next caveat is 'only CC BY-SA 4.0', not version 3, just version 4. The competition has been going since 2008, but people only recently started using CC BY-SA 4.0 commonly. Still, some earlier years had some entries using the 4.0 licence.

Alex Schroeder had written about the dungeons , archived them, and noted some compression, which provided a nice and easy source to download the pdfs. After that, it was a small job of looking through...1604 files!?

The licence info, authors, et c. were mostly not in the pdf's metadata. Where the pdf had the info, it was usually wrong. Various tools, such as 'Microsoft this', and 'Adobe that' put themselves into the 'Creator' field.

Many files had to be removed. About a third did not state a licence. Some added other stipulations (e.g. CC BY-NC-SA).

And some artists, perhaps worried about becoming one of those older submissions with an out-of-date CC licence, decided to travel backwards in time and apply a CC BY-SA 5.0 licence. This licence does not exist, but if it ever does then I'll be able to add those files to the repository.

Note to time-travelling artists: please say 'Creative Commons BY-SA [ current version ], or (at your option) any later version'

Despite hours of manual checking, and peering at every part of the page to try and find any hint of the words 'Creative Commons', and check the actual wording, mistakes always creep in. If you spot an error, feel free to fix it and send me up updated torrent file.

Torrent files seem the best way to share groups of unchanging files.
